Independence BBQ/Games

The campers enjoyed themselves at the part for our Independence BBQ on Friday. We joined Aggie's Camp and enjoyed an afternoon of games, fellowship and fun. The campers feasted on hotdogs, hamburgers, sandwiches, watermelon and much more. What a great day.

Camp Happenings

The students enjoyed themselves yesterday at Wagner Science Museum. They learned all about the different birds and what makes them birds.

After the presentation, the kids learned how to bird watch and were able to recognize the different birds they saw in the area.

The children enjoyed the scavenger hunt throughout the museum. There were hundreds of fossils dating back to over 10,000 years. WOW!! It was quite fascinating to see.

The camper enjoyed an afternoon picnic in the park and worked on completing their craft project.

As a reminder, Monday is bowling and we have cooking in the afternoon. Tuesday, we have swimming in the morning at the Nile Swim Club.

Parents are able to utilize our center on a daily basis to receive help with all course work and online lessons. We service children in virtual and self-paced courses. Get Ready for Summer Camp

Get Ready for Summer Camp!!! Monday, June 20th is our first day of camp. Come and enjoy with us a summer filled with fun activities for ages 5—14. Campers will enjoy arts & crafts, music, drama, field trips, swimming and much more.

If you are attending summer camp with us, you must fill out the attached form and return it. We must have an exact count so please let me know ASAP. Families of Accel do not have to pay the $50 non-refundable registration fee. That fee has been waived. All non-Accel students, must pay the $50 non-refundable registration fee.

SUMMER CAMP

Daily schedule consist of : Morning meeting with counselors to review the daily schedule and then activity of either morning enrichment, arts and crafts, team building or recreation activity. Some of the activities include: bowling, skating, swimming, field trips to Lynnville Orchard, performances at the Mann Music Center, Upper Darby Summer Stage, etc. Breakfast and lunch are also included in the weekly fee.

Reading and Math Enrichment

As part of the summer program, youth will engage in enrichment classes each Tuesday and Thursday morning. These classes are designed to help to keep our campers academic skill levels up and to prepare them for the next school year. Students who attend summer school will still be able to enjoy all the benefits of camp activities.

Service Learning Projects

Campers will also be involved in community service projects; helping and sending cards to seniors, visiting the animal and homeless shelters.

Weekend Retreat

At the end of our camp, campers can enjoy our annual away weekend retreat. This year we are headed to the Malibu Dude Ranch (an additional fee of $160 per student will be required and includes transportation, lodging, meals and activities). What a great way to end the summer!

Camp Questions and Answers

What time must camper arrive? All campers must be on site by 8:30 am. After breakfast, camp activities will begin at 9:00 am.

When are the camp fees due? The camp fees are due every Monday morning for the current week. Activity fees are included in the weekly fee and must be paid to ensure that the camper can participate in activities, such as bowling, skating, etc.

Is there a family plan? Yes, we do provide discounts to families with more than one child. Contact the Director for details.

What is the dress code? The campers must report daily in sneakers and comfortable clothing. We do not permit any open toe shoes, such as sandals, flip flops, nor tank-tops or any inappropriate dress. For swim days, campers must come prepared with a bathing suit or trunks, towel, sunscreen and a tote to carry the items. Campers will receive a camp shirt to wear on trip days.

Is there anything campers cannot bring to camp? Campers may not bring iPods, electronic games, or other hand held devices. Cell phones are not permitted to be used during camp hours.

Is extended care available? Yes, extended care is available from 7:00 am -8:30 am and from 5:00 pm-6:00 pm for an additional fee of $15 per week.

How will I know what is going on during the week. A calendar of events will be distributed and emailed to parents. Also you will find a weekly agenda posted inside the office at the center.

Counseling staff consist of the director, assistant director, certified teachers, junior counselors, registered nurse. All staff are first aid trained and screen through reference checks and have been cleared through FBI, child abuse and criminal clearances.

What are behavioral expectations? All campers and staff are expected to treat each other with respect, humility, honesty, caring and with the love of Christ. Parents are expected to sign a statement noting the rules and regulations. Any camper found not complying with the rules will be dismissed from the summer program

Camp is off to a great start. The campers went bowling, participated in math kickball, and water volleyball outside. By 4:30 pm all the kids were worn out. What a great day!!

Cyber Enrichment Summer Camp Enrolling

We had so much fun that we are doing the entrepreneurship camp again this summer. In addition to the our Fun in the Sun activities, our young campers will learn the nuts and bolts of what it takes to plan for and launch their own business. Our campers start with their own business idea and then work with a team of peers and instructors to fine-tune their ideas. From there, they learn to create company logos, flyers, and business cards.

State Sen. Jeffrey E. Piccola, R-Dauphin, yesterday said he'll introduce legislation to take a firmer line with low-performing school districts, warning that may involve closing some schools and dissolving some districts.

Mr. Piccola, chairman of the Senate Education Committee, said other options include merit pay for teachers and administrators, converting struggling schools into charter schools and bringing in outside management groups.

Some of the language reflects the U.S. Department of Education's get-tough stance in inviting states to compete for $4 billion in Race to the Top funds.

Mr. Piccola said another option is requiring troubled districts to open accelerated learning academies, a concept he borrowed from the Pittsburgh Public Schools. In 2006-07, Pittsburgh opened eight academies with special programs and a longer school day and year.

While Mr. Piccola's bill would focus on districts that have repeatedly failed to meet the federal performance standard known as "adequate yearly progress," it also would give new scrutiny to districts that have just one or two bad years.

"It's time we realize that when our children fail, it's often because the system has failed," he said in a statement. "We must act to provide the children of Pennsylvania's lowest-performing school districts with the education they so very much need and deserve."

Karen Seivard, Education Committee counsel, said the bill likely will be introduced next month. She said she was not aware of companion legislation planned in the House.

Though the location had not been determined, a hearing on Mr. Piccola's bill was scheduled for Jan. 22 in Pittsburgh. City schools made AYP this year after missing the standard six years in a row.

A hearing also was planned for Harrisburg, where city schools have missed AYP for seven years.

Mr. Piccola's bill would create a new Education Empowerment Law, replacing the one enacted in 2000 and due to expire June 30.

The original law, which Mr. Piccola helped author, has funneled additional money to low-performing districts statewide so they could finance improvements.

Pittsburgh was a late addition to the list in 2006. Duquesne City School District and the Chester-Upland, Harrisburg, Philadelphia and Reading districts also are on the list.

A handful of districts, including Aliquippa and Wilkinsburg, were on the list at one time and worked their way off of it. But Mr. Piccola isn't satisfied.

"Since the enactment of the Empowerment Law, there continues to be a lack of academic improvement in some of our urban school districts throughout Pennsylvania, most noticeably here in Harrisburg where citizens have grown more and more displeased and impatient with the consistent failure of the district," he said.

Under the bill, schools and districts failing to make AYP for eight years or more would be placed under the control of three-member "school reform commissions" reporting to the state secretary of education. The secretary could order the commission to close a school or dissolve a district.

Depending on how many years they've missed AYP, other schools and districts would face more moderate measures, such as merit pay for instructional employees, new charter schools and creation of accelerated learning academies. Mr. Piccola's staff heard about Pittsburgh's academies and believes they would be a viable option elsewhere, Ms. Seivard said.

Philadelphia, which already has a school reform commission and has missed AYP for seven years, would be exempt from the law.

It wasn't clear whether all of the sanctions would be new. A state Department of Education Web site says schools that have missed AYP for at least five years already are "subject to governance changes such as reconstitution, chartering and privatization."

Overall, Ms. Seivard said, the bill would attempt to force districts to take stronger action faster than before, so they don't falter for long periods. Under the bill, she said, a district would have to write an improvement plan after missing AYP only one year.

Renovations for new facility almost complete

Accel Cyber will be moving shortly into their new facility in January. Renovations are for the new facility is expected to be complete by January 9th. Expected move in date is slated for January 19th. It has been a long journey and the staff, parents and students are looking forward to the move.

Annual Disney Trip

Red Ribbon Week: October 23 through 31^st.

Red Ribbon Week is designed to discuss with youth the harmful effects of drugs, and why everyone should lead a drug-free life. During this week, we will be distributing information and engaging in activities that promotes a drug free lifestyle.

Red Ribbon Week is not a prevention or early intervention program. It is an awareness campaign observed annually the last full week in October. We regard Red Ribbon Week as the kick off to a year of prevention in our schools and in our communities.

Red Ribbon Week is also a CALL TO ACTION! This week-long campaign provides multiple opportunities for students, parents, teachers and others to join together to address the alcohol, tobacco, other drug and violence related issues or concerns in their community.

Clothing Swap: To prepare for the spring or fall and to make space in our closets, we sort through clothing that we have out grown. If you have clothing that is in good condition, bring them into the center for ACCP’s first annual clothing swap beginning on October 5^th. The clothing swap will give us the opportunity to share what we have and be a blessing to someone else.

Columbus Day: We are closed on Columbus day (October 12^th) for staff in-service training. Mobile Dentist will be at Aggie’s Childcare and Preschool on October 12^th. If you would like for your child to receive a dental checkup, please let me know so arrangement can be made for your child. Since ACCEL will be closed for in-service training on this day, if your child is participating, you will be responsible for making sure your child arrives at the center and someone is available to escort them back home once the appointment is done. If extended care is needed, please notify the office. Additional fee will apply.

Fall Fundraiser: We will be starting our fall fundraiser in October. We will be selling cookie dough for the holidays. A prize will be awarded to the students who sells the most cookie dough. Information will be distributed shortly.

Support Saint Judes: Please support Saint Judes by participating in the Annual Math-A-Thon or making a donation. Under the direction of Scholastic, the Math-A-Thon Funbook has designed a new curriculum of math activities to meet national standards in education and challenge today’s K – 8 students with age-appropriate math problems. To participate, students ask family and friends for pledges to solve math problems in the Math-A-Thon Funbook. The funds raised by the students benefit St. Jude, where doctors and scientists work to eradicate childhood cancer and other catastrophic childhood diseases. Stay tuned for more information!

Youth for Earth Survival (Y.E.S.) Let’s support Y.E.S. in their recycling program. Bring in any recyclables you may have. Let’s help keep the planet safe.

Harvest Dance/Party: October 30^th: Harvest Dance/ Festival (K-3 Harvest Party). This year will be will be hosting a harvest dance for our students in grades 4-9). The Harvest Dance will take place at the new facility (7400 Marshall Road). Students may bring a friend. Stay tune for more information.

PE Reminder: Please send in $2 with your child’s on his/her scheduled gym day for membership at Lansdowne YMCA. The annual cost of membership is $30. Once you have your membership, you can use it at any YMCA.
